Samsung Device care: what it does and what to ignore

You're trying to free space before a trip, your Galaxy phone says storage is almost full, and Device care offers a big friendly button that promises to optimize everything. Tap it if you want. Just don't expect it to turn an old phone into a new one.

Device care is useful, but it’s a dashboard first and an optimizer second. It helps you find battery drain, storage pressure, background apps, memory use, and security checks from one place. The best parts are the specific tools, not the one-tap cleanup.

Samsung’s menus also change names between One UI versions. Some phones show Settings > Device care. Others show Settings > Battery and device care. Android 17 is now out first on most supported Pixel phones, while Galaxy phones will get Samsung’s Android 17-based One UI update later, so expect another round of small wording and layout changes.

What Device care is

Device care is Samsung’s built-in maintenance area for Galaxy phones and tablets. Older One UI versions called it Device maintenance or Battery and device care. Current versions usually group these areas together:

  • Battery
  • Storage
  • Memory
  • App protection or Device protection
  • Performance profile on supported models
  • Maintenance Mode

Samsung says the available screens and settings can vary by model, country, carrier, and One UI version. That’s not a footnote. It’s the reason your friend’s Galaxy S24 Ultra may show a setting your Galaxy A-series phone doesn’t.

The Optimize now button

Optimize now runs a quick maintenance pass. It can close background apps that aren’t in active use, look for unusual battery behavior, remove some unnecessary files, and run a security scan if protection is enabled.

It’s safe. It’s also limited.

On a newer Galaxy phone with 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM, you probably won’t feel much difference after tapping it. Android already keeps memory under control. On an older phone with 4 GB of RAM, it may briefly reduce stutter because it closes cached apps and gives the system more breathing room.

The button doesn’t delete your photos. It doesn’t fix a damaged battery. It doesn’t make a slow UFS or eMMC storage chip faster. Think of it as a quick checkup, not a repair job.

Battery

The Battery section shows charge level, estimated time remaining, a usage graph, and app-by-app battery consumption. This is one of the better parts of Device care because it points to actual culprits.

Look for apps with high background time. A messaging app you use all day is expected to appear near the top. A shopping app running in the background for six hours is different.

From the Battery section, you can usually access:

  • Battery usage, which shows recent app and system drain.
  • Power saving, which reduces background activity, refresh rate, brightness, and some visual effects.
  • Background usage limits, where apps can be set to sleeping, deep sleeping, or never sleeping.
  • Battery protection, where newer One UI versions offer charging limits and adaptive overnight behavior.

Be careful with deep sleeping apps. Samsung’s background controls are stronger than stock Android on many builds. Deep sleeping a random game is fine. Deep sleeping Signal, WhatsApp, Gmail, or your banking app can mean delayed notifications or broken background sync.

Battery protection is worth using before the battery is already tired. On One UI 7, Samsung documents Basic, Maximum, and sleep-based protection behavior, with supported Maximum limits such as 80%, 85%, 90%, and 95%. Older One UI versions often had a simpler 85% style limit.

Storage

Storage is the section most people should actually open. It shows total capacity, used space, and categories such as Apps, Images, Videos, Audio, Documents, and Other.

Device care’s cleanup approach is conservative. That’s good. It doesn’t behave like old Android cleaner apps that promised to free 10 GB by deleting mystery cache. It shows files and categories, then asks before removing anything meaningful.

Useful places to check:

  • Trash, where deleted media can sit for 30 days before permanent deletion.
  • Large files, which can reveal downloaded videos, screen recordings, or forgotten ZIP files.
  • Unused apps, especially on One UI 7, where Samsung can suggest archiving apps you haven’t opened in the last 30 days.
  • App size lists, which show when one messaging app or streaming app has quietly eaten several gigabytes.

App archiving is better than uninstalling when you’re unsure. It removes the app package but keeps app data, so reinstalling later can pick up where you left off. It won’t solve everything, but it’s a decent middle step.

One thing Device care won’t fully explain is storage performance. A phone at 94% storage use can feel sluggish because the system has less room for caches, updates, logs, and temporary files. A cheap phone with slow storage and 94% usage often feels worse than an older flagship with plenty of free space.

Memory

The Memory screen shows RAM use and offers Clean now. This closes background apps to free memory.

Use it as a diagnostic, not a daily habit. If one app is using 2 GB of RAM and your phone is stuttering, that tells you something. Force-stopping or updating that app may help.

Repeatedly clearing RAM usually doesn’t. Android keeps apps in memory because reopening them from RAM is faster than loading them from storage. When you clear everything, the phone has to rebuild that cache. You may get a clean number for ten minutes and slower app launches afterward.

The Excluded apps list is useful if you do use memory cleaning. Navigation, music, fitness tracking, VPN, and accessibility apps are the usual candidates because you don’t want them killed in the background.

App protection and security scans

Samsung includes a built-in app security scanner inside Device care on many Galaxy phones. Depending on your region and One UI version, the section may be called App protection, Device protection, or something close to that.

The scanner checks installed apps and suspicious behavior. It is not a desktop-style antivirus that deeply scans every file on storage. Android doesn’t work like Windows, and that is mostly a good thing.

For most users, Samsung’s protection plus Google Play Protect is enough. A separate third-party antivirus app often adds more notifications than security. The bigger wins are boring: install apps from trusted sources, keep system updates current, and don’t grant SMS, notification, accessibility, or device admin permissions to apps that have no business asking for them.

Performance profile

Some Galaxy models include a Performance profile setting. Flagships are more likely to have it than budget A-series phones.

The exact labels vary, but the idea is simple:

  • Standard or Optimized gives the normal balance of speed and battery life.
  • Light reduces performance a bit to save battery and lower heat.
  • High performance, where available, favors speed and can increase heat and drain.

Light mode is underrated. On a modern flagship, the phone is already fast enough for messages, browser use, maps, banking, and social apps. Giving up a little peak CPU performance can buy cooler operation and longer battery life without changing how the phone feels day to day.

Don’t use High performance unless you know why you need it.

Maintenance Mode

Maintenance Mode is one of Samsung’s best privacy features. Use it when you’re handing the phone to a repair shop, a carrier store, or anyone else who needs to test the device without seeing your personal data.

When you enable Maintenance Mode, the phone restarts into a restricted state. Your accounts, photos, messages, and normal apps are hidden. The technician gets a clean environment for diagnostics and repair work.

On newer One UI versions, Maintenance Mode also connects with Temporary cloud backup. Samsung’s temporary backup stores data in Samsung Cloud for up to 30 days, and Samsung has described it as having no total storage limit, with individual files capped at 100 GB. You still need Wi-Fi and a Samsung account.

Use this before repairs. Don’t rely on hope and a lock screen.

Auto optimization

Auto optimization can schedule maintenance when you aren’t using the phone. On some builds, it includes automatic restart behavior.

A scheduled restart once a week is reasonable. It clears stuck processes, resets temporary weirdness, and fixes the kind of small Android problems that don’t deserve a full troubleshooting session.

Daily restarts are unnecessary for most people. If your phone needs a reboot every morning to behave, something else is wrong: a bad app, a broken update, low storage, or aging hardware.

What Device care won’t fix

Device care can’t fix hardware.

A degraded battery still needs replacement. A failing charging port still needs repair. A weak antenna won’t improve because you tapped Optimize now. A six-year-old phone with modern apps and little RAM will still feel old.

It also won’t replace good judgment. If Device care shows one app causing 40% of your drain, the fix is to restrict it, update it, uninstall it, or change how you use it. The dashboard can show the problem. It can’t decide your priorities for you.

Mistakes worth avoiding

Don’t run Optimize now every day because you think Android needs constant cleaning. It doesn’t. Use it after a major update, after installing several apps, or when the phone feels off.

Don’t clear RAM as a reflex. It can help when one app is stuck, but constant memory cleaning often makes app launches slower because Android has to reload what it would have kept cached.

Don’t deep sleep apps that need to notify you. Messaging, email, calendar, banking, smart home, alarm, fitness, work apps, VPN, and accessibility tools can all break in quiet ways when background access is cut too hard.

And don’t use Device care as your only battery health tool. It shows battery use and protection settings, but most Galaxy phones still need Samsung Members or the newer Settings > Battery > Battery information page for health checks.
