How to test your phone's charging port

Learn how to test an Android phone charging port with cable checks, safe cleaning, charging-current readings, and built-in diagnostics.


You’re holding the cable at a weird angle, the charging icon keeps flickering, and the phone only charges when it sits perfectly still. That usually feels like a dead charging port, but don’t start there.

Start with the boring checks. They catch more problems than people expect.

Rule out the cable and adapter first

Try a different USB-C or Micro-USB cable with the same adapter. Then try a different adapter with the original cable. If you can, test both accessories with another phone or tablet.

A cable can fail internally long before it looks damaged. One data or power pin can go bad and drop a fast charger down to a slow trickle. The outside of the cable might still look fine, which is annoying, but normal.

If the same cable and adapter charge another device properly, the phone’s port moves higher on the suspect list. If another cable suddenly fixes everything, the port probably wasn’t the issue.

Inspect the port

Turn the phone off and shine a flashlight straight into the charging port. Look for lint pressed against the back wall of the port. Pocket lint builds up slowly, gets compacted by the charger plug, and eventually stops the connector from seating fully.

Check the fit too. A healthy USB-C plug should sit firmly in the port. It shouldn’t fall out, wobble heavily, or disconnect when you move the phone a little. A small amount of play is normal, especially on older phones. A connection that cuts in and out is not.

Look for green, white, or dark residue on the pins. That points to corrosion or moisture exposure. Cleaning out dust can help with lint. It won’t fix a corroded contact.

Clean it carefully

If you can see dust or lint, keep the port facing downward and try a few short bursts from a handheld air blower or compressed-air can. Don’t blast the port from point-blank range. The goal is to loosen debris, not force it deeper inside.

For compacted lint, use a dry soft electronics brush or a clean dry toothbrush. Avoid metal tools. A metal pin can bend a contact or short something. I also wouldn’t use a wooden toothpick unless you have no better option, because it can splinter and leave a new problem inside the port.

Don’t pour alcohol or contact cleaner into the phone. Even if a repair tech uses fluids in a controlled shop setting, that doesn’t make it a safe home fix.

After cleaning, plug the charger in again. If the cable now clicks in more firmly, lint was probably the main issue.

Check charging current

Android exposes battery current readings through BatteryManager on devices that support the measurement. Apps such as Ampere can display those readings, but treat them as a comparison tool, not a lab meter.

Open Ampere with the charger disconnected and note the discharge reading. Plug the charger in, wait about 10 seconds, and watch the number settle. Battery level, heat, screen brightness, and the phone’s charging rules all affect the reading.

A 2A charger won’t always show 2000 mA on screen. If the battery is already near full, the phone will deliberately slow down. But if you see something like 200 or 300 mA from a known-good wall charger and known-good cable, and the number jumps whenever you touch the connector, the port isn’t making steady contact.

Samsung owners have another route. Open Samsung Members, go to Diagnostics, then Phone diagnostics, and run Cable charging or USB connection if those tests are available on your model. Older Samsung Members versions may label the area Support or Get help.

The Samsung dialer code *#0*# can also open a hardware test menu on many Galaxy phones. Use the Samsung Phone app, not a third-party dialer. On newer One UI builds, carrier models, or phones with security restrictions, the code may do nothing. That’s normal now.

Android 17 didn’t add a universal charging-port test for every Android phone. Pixel phones, Samsung phones, and Xiaomi phones still rely on different diagnostic paths.

Try Safe mode

If the port is clean, the cable fits well, and charging still behaves strangely, boot into Safe mode. Safe mode disables third-party apps, so it’s a quick way to spot software interference.

On most Android phones, hold the power button, then long-press Power off until the Safe mode prompt appears. On many Samsung phones, restart the phone and hold Volume Down while it boots.

If charging works normally in Safe mode, look at recently installed battery, automation, security, or charging-animation apps. One of them may be interfering with charging behavior or notifications.

When the port needs repair

The port is probably damaged when all of these are true: the charger and cable work elsewhere, the port is clean, the plug still fits loosely, and current readings stay low or unstable.

Repair difficulty depends on the phone. Many Samsung Galaxy, Xiaomi, Motorola, and budget Android phones place the USB port on a separate daughter board. That is usually a routine repair. Some phones have the port soldered to the main board, which takes more skill and costs more because the technician is doing board-level work.

Wireless charging can buy you time if your phone supports it. It bypasses the USB port completely, although it’s usually slower and less convenient than wired charging.
