Can an app fix a degraded battery?

No Android app can repair a degraded battery. Battery repair apps can show stats or change settings, but lost battery capacity needs a replacement, not software.

Could a battery repair app actually bring back lost capacity? No. Not a repair app, not a booster, not a calibration tool, and not an optimizer with a nice animation.

The battery is a physical part. Once the chemistry inside the cell has aged, software can’t put the lost capacity back.

What degradation actually means

Battery degradation is not a setting that drifted out of place. It’s chemical aging inside the cell.

As a lithium-ion battery is used, side reactions slowly consume active lithium and increase internal resistance. One common mechanism is growth of the solid electrolyte interface, often shortened to SEI, on the anode. That layer is part of normal battery behavior, but as it grows, less lithium remains available for storing energy and the battery has a harder time delivering power under load.

Heat, high charge levels, deep discharges, fast charging in bad conditions, and simple age all push the process along. The exact pace varies a lot between phones. A Pixel 8a or later is rated by Google to retain up to 80% capacity for about 1000 charge cycles, while Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold are rated around 800 cycles. Apple rates iPhone 14 and earlier models for 80% at 500 complete cycles under ideal conditions, and iPhone 15 and later models for 1000 cycles.

So the old “300 to 500 cycles” rule is too crude now. Some older phones fit it. Many newer phones are rated better. Either way, the direction is the same: capacity goes down, and software can’t reverse it.

What battery repair apps actually do

Most battery optimizer apps do one of a few ordinary things. They close background apps, change brightness, toggle Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, clear cache, show charging stats, or display a fake “repairing cells” progress bar.

The stats can be useful. The fake repair is not.

Force-closing background apps is especially overrated on modern Android. Android already has Doze, App Standby, app standby buckets, background execution limits, and manufacturer battery controls. If an app is misbehaving, restrict it or uninstall it. Killing everything repeatedly can make apps reload from scratch and use more power than leaving them suspended.

Some optimizer apps are worse than useless. They ask for broad permissions, run ads, keep background services alive, and claim credit for normal Android behavior. Google Play started rolling out battery-related quality treatments in March 2026 for apps that abuse partial wake locks, but that doesn’t mean every battery app in the store is worth trusting.

Battery health pages are not universal on Android 17

This is a place where people get misled. Android 17 is current now, but Android still doesn’t mean every phone exposes the same battery health screen.

On supported Pixel phones, the useful path is Settings > Battery > Battery health. Google says this Battery health feature is only available on Pixel 8a and later, and it is not available on Pixel Tablet. Older Pixels such as Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro don’t show battery health status, even though they still receive updates.

Samsung handles it differently. The Samsung Members app can run Support > Phone diagnostics > Battery status, but it usually reports a condition result rather than the same kind of capacity percentage you see on supported Pixels or iPhones.

Third-party monitoring apps can estimate capacity from charging sessions. That can be helpful for spotting a trend, but don’t treat one reading as a lab result. Cable quality, charger behavior, temperature, and partial charges can all skew the estimate.

What about calibration?

Calibration is the claim that the battery percentage display is wrong and needs to be reset. Sometimes the gauge can be inaccurate, especially after a battery replacement, a long period of weird charging, or a system bug. That is different from battery health.

A full charge and normal use cycle may help the phone’s fuel gauge settle. It won’t restore capacity. Repeatedly draining the phone to 0% is a bad habit and can stress the battery more than it helps the gauge.

If your phone shuts off at 20%, jumps from 35% to 10%, or drops hard under load, the problem is often a worn battery or a bad battery reading. An app can’t know for sure from the outside.

What you can do instead

Check the built-in tools first. On supported Pixels, look at Settings > Battery > Battery health and Settings > About phone > Battery information for cycle count. On Samsung, use Samsung Members diagnostics. On other Android phones, the location and quality of battery reporting varies by manufacturer.

Then check for software drain. Settings > Battery > Battery usage can show whether one app is responsible for a bad day. Restrict background use for obvious offenders. Update apps. Remove the ones you don’t need.

If battery health is below 80%, replacement is the real fix. The same goes if the phone shuts down early, swells, gets hot during light use, or has erratic percentage jumps. A factory reset can improve battery life when software is the problem, but it can’t increase the battery’s physical capacity.

Good habits still matter. Keep the phone cool, avoid leaving it at 100% in heat for long periods, use built-in charging protection when available, and don’t chase miracle apps.
